Zabadak (No. 29), April 2015: Magazines

Named after one of the numerous hit singles by Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich (now there’s a real tongue twister!), Zabadak has been in circulation for more than 30 years. Not only does the long-running print publication offer epic coverage on the beloved British band each and every episode, but it also provides plenty of ink on loads of other great acts as well, ranging from the ’50s to the present day.

Published and edited by Ron Cooper, Zabadak is packed to the ceiling with interviews, comprehensive discographies, news items, photos, and record and concerts reviews. Here in the most recent installment we’re treated to the nitty gritty on Tame Impala, Andy Scott’s Sweet, the Lovin’ Spoonful, Temple Balls, Blonde Redhead, Cloud Control, the Turtles, Sparks, Manfred Mann, Rubettes, Peter Daltrey of Kaleidoscope fame, the Jezabels, the Clan, Barry Gibb, Kool and the Gang – and, of course, tons of Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich tidbits. A sizeable amount of obituaries sadly dot the pages, but that seems to go with the territory lately, considering how many of our favorite performers are getting up there in age.

Excellent and knowledgable writing, compounded by a true love for its subject allows Zabadak to be the fun and exciting read it is, while a clean and tidy black and white layout is gravy on the biscuit, making it easy on the eyes. No matter what your taste in music is, be it obscure bands or superstar artists, you’re guaranteed to find lots of things to enjoy about Zabadak, so if you’re not already hip to the magazine, now is the time to score a copy and support its worthy cause. Select back issues of Zabadak are additionally available, and can be obtained by contacting Ron at their website.
