Tired of waiting on Peter Gabriel’s first new album of material since 2002’s Up? Here’s a chance to sample a brand-new song from the brand-new solo Rock and Roll Hall of Famer.
He has provided the original music for a anthology film called Words With Gods, and a previously unheard track titled “Show Yourself” is included on this preview trailer. Sneak peak engagements for the movie are reportedly scheduled to begin next week. In the meantime, this is as close as you’ll get.
Last December, in discussing the prospect of a new album, Gabriel hinted that the stripped-down feel of “Show Yourself” might provide a road map for completing this long-awaited studio effort: “It was done quite simply and I liked that approach,” Gabriel said. “It wasn’t the sort of rhythmic project that I imagined. I thought maybe one or two songs in that style might actually be fun to do.”
Gabriel, who was earlier inducted in the Rock Hall as a member of Genesis, has plenty of experience working in film, most notably creating the Grammy-winning score for 1989’s The Last Temptation of Christ. He also wrote a song, called “Down to Earth,” for 2008’s Wall-E, and created the score for 2002’s Rabbit-Proof Fence. Words with Gods will include nine segments focusing on spirituality, with contributions from a series of directors including Guillermo Arriaga.
