One Track Mind: Brian Eno + Karl Hyde, “Daddy’s Car” from Someday World (2014)

Just as much as the first track from Brian Eno’s forthcoming collaboration with Underworld’s Karl Hyde was girded by a doomy sense of portent, “Daddy’s Car” is a compulsively listenable ride — all scronky keyboard blips, ass-moving beats and late-night promise.

This new subtext — a dash of Afrobeat, a splash of Steve Reich — illustrates just how intriguing their intersection promises to be, as two endless musical tinkerers give us a peek into their quick, but very fruitful meeting of the minds on Someday World, due May 6, 2014 from Warp.

With “The Satellites” and “Daddy’s Car,” Eno and Hyde have already covered a chasm of stylistic invention as broad and intriguing as Joy Divison morphing into New Order — and they’re only getting started.

Someday World, recorded over just one month of furious activity late last year, includes seven more tracks composed and sung by the duo. Eno and Hyde are augmented by a backing group that includes
co-producer Fred Gibson, John Reynolds, Chris Vatalaro and Marianna Champion on “Daddy’s Car.” Tessa Angus, Will Champion and Andy Mackay are among those who contribute elsewhere.
