Even as Steve Perry continues work on a long-awaited new studio effort, he’s batting back rumors of a reunion with his old band Journey. In fact, he couldn’t have been more emphatic during a red-carpet interview last night.
“Absolutely a false rumor,” Perry tells Brogyn Gage. “You’re hearing it from me: Nope.”
Perry, who talked to Gage at the Hollywood premiere of the Scott Waugh-directed film Need for Speed, last issued an album with Journey in 1996. He hasn’t released a new solo album since 1994’s For the Love of Strange Medicine.
In the interim, Journey has moved on with Filipino fireplug Arnel Pineda fronting the group. Members of Journey’s management, and the band itself, have also forcefully denied any talk of getting back together with Perry, who joined Journey in 1978 — and proceeded to turn them into one of the biggest arena-rock bands of the 1980s.
But Perry became a reclusive figure after his split with Journey, battling a series of health issues including hip problems and a cancer scare. Now in the midst of what appears to be a full recovery, Perry has rediscovered his creativity, as well.
“I am working on new music,” Perry adds. “It’s beautiful. It’s very inspirational.” As for a release date? “Who knows? It could be soon — as soon as we finish it,” Perry says, adding that he hopes to issue something in 2014. “I would love that.”

I have a friend who is a red carpet reporter for a website who could have done a way better job than this idiot. Wow. Poor Steve Perry. And I’m embarrassed for this “reporter.”
