You ever wonder what Tom Waits does with his spare time? I bet he gets up in the morning, has coffee and a plate of bacon and eggs with rye toast, and then heads out with the newspaper under his arm to make a pass through the local yard sales — looking to extend his collection of bull horns and World War II surplus electronics.
Well, some of that might be true, but it turns out that ‘ole Tom has been involved in executive-producing (along with Johnny Depp) the next Chuck E. Weiss record. Due out on April 15th, Red Beans and Weiss looks to be yet another slab of down and dirty fun emanating from the darker side of Los Angeles.
If you’re not familiar with Chuck E. Weiss, the legend: he’s the guy Rickie Lee Jones was singing about. Discovered in Denver and transplanted to L.A., Weiss was a cohort of both Jones and Mr. Waits.
And what kind of music comes from a guy whose personal and professional resume includes the likes of Dr. John, Willie Dixon, Rickie Lee Jones, and Tom Waits? Go ahead and give “Boston Blackie” a listen. It’s a big slab of naughty, greasy fun.
Chuck E. Weiss’ Red Beans and Weiss will be released by Anti Records on April 15, 2014. Do youself a favor and skip the yard sales the day. The bull horns can wait.
