If this advance track (and the PR verbiage) are any indication Karl Denson took his Tiny Universe in a profoundly rock direction for New Ammo. Given the singer, saxophonist and flute player’s stints in the bands of Lenny Kravitz and Greyboy Allstars, no one should be surprised by his diversity.
What might be more uncommon, though, is his ability to lead his band effortlessly through so many styles, from James Brown to Bob Marley. “My Baby” leans more toward George Thorogood with Brown’s funky thump and horns kick. Helping out Denson on vocals is the Bay Area singer Nicki Bluhm whose own diversity puts her roughly in a space between Grace Potter and Lucinda Williams. For this song, that’s a great place to be.
A song like this makes it almost a given that there’s going to be an attacking guitar solo, but we get Denson busting out a bullying sax instead and he doesn’t make you miss that lead guitar at all.
New Ammo is set to fire off February 4, 2014 on Stoopid Records. With Greyboy cohort Robert Walter and Garage a Trois vibist Mike Dillon sitting in, this shows some promise of being yet another Denson diversion that delights.
