As Warner Bros. gets set to release a sprawling five-disc reissue of Van Morrison’s breakthrough Moondance, here’s a chance to hear one of its tastiest extras — an alternate take on “Into the Mystic.”
In all, this new box has uncovered some 50 previously unheard moments, with additional studio outtakes that include the title track and “Caravan.” There are also several early versions, plus a new final mix, of the previously unreleased 1969 song “I Shall Sing” — which later became a hit for Art Garfunkel as part of his solo debut some four years later.
Also of note: A quite different pass on “I’ve Been Working,” which would subsequently find a home on 1970’s His Band and the Street Choir. Elliott Scheiner, who served as the original engineer on Moondance, oversaw hi-res stereo and surround mixes, as well.
Due October 22, 2013, this comprehensive reissue will also be available as an expanded-edition two-disc set, and as a newly remastered standard-edition single disc.
