No new album has yet emerged, but buzz is already building for Circa Zero — a new project featuring the Police’s Andy Summers that also features multi-instrumentalist Rob Giles and drummer Emmanuelle Caplette.
Summers says the group already has a entire album’s worth of material recorded and mastered. All that’s left is to find the right home for Circa Zero.
Oh, and to more fully explain how this differs from a certain Hall of Fame trio that Summers came to wide fame with back in the 1980s.
“I’d like to think I have something of a signature style,” Summers says in this clip, “which is mostly based out of negation: I don’t like this, I don’t like that. There’s no point in my completely eschewing any style I’ve had. But we’re writing new songs, and they become the framework for my particular sensibility on the guitar.”
Summers met Giles during a gig of his with the Rescues, and instantly connected Giles with some work Summers was already doing toward a new, but as yet unfocused project. New songs in hand, Circa Zero has already begun playing dates, including a debut show last month at the El Rey in Los Angeles.
“Without resorting to all of the cliches,” Summer says, “it is rock. They’re rock songs. It’s sort of guitar driven. For instance, I can say what it’s not. It’s not the Foo Fighters; it’s not as heavy as that. It’s lyrical, guitar-driven, edgy rock.”
