Get a free taste of Toad the Wet Sprocket’s forthcoming New Constellation, along with a trio of re-done classic tracks, in advance of the group’s first new album together in 16 years.
Titled Something Old, Something New, this new EP — available here for free download through NoiseTrade — features two tracks from New Constellation, a crowd-funded project due on September 17, 2013 from Toad’s own Abe’s Record.
“New Constellation,” this project’s lead single and title track, is a riffy delight — this power-pop rocket ride that makes no bones about its thunderstuck hopefulness. “California Wasted,” meanwhile, pulls out of the darker paint brushes that Glen Phillips has always used to leavened Toad the Wet Spocket’s more approachable moments.
In keeping with the title, Something Old, Something New is rounded out by faithful renditions of a trio of Toad songs, representative of the group’s more recent efforts to regain control of their catalog after a stint with Columbia Records in the 1990s. “All I Want” is a little more oaken, but otherwise no worse for the wear. “Fall Down” still shoves its way forward with gritty menace. And then there’s “Crazy Life,” which closes out the perfectly named EP on a ruminative grace note.
