Warren Haynes’ Gov’t Mule has hatched an interesting idea: Issuing a new double-album project with Disc 1 devoted to new songs, while the second disc features those same song interpreted with a series of big-name guests.
“Captured” represents the first nibble of Shout!, a simmering, smoke-filled paean to the helplessness of true love — complete with a heart-rending vocal and a searching turn on the guitar. After four years away from studio work, there couldn’t be a more appropriate — or yearningly complex — return for Matt Abts, Jorgen Carlsson, Danny Louis and Haynes.
As for the second disc on Shout!, due September 24, 2013 as Gov’t Mule’s debut on Blue Note Records, look for Jim James of My Morning Jacket to weigh in with a rendition of “Captured.” Elsewhere, guests include Dr. John (“Stoop So Low”), Glenn Hughes (“No Reward”), Dave Matthews (“Forsaken Savior) and Steve Winwood (“When The World Gets Small”), among others.
The busy Haynes will be touring with Gov’t Mule in September, even while making appearances as part of the Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration and with the Allman Brothers Band, with whom he’s played since 1989.
