This song makes everything that happened on the Tedeschi Trucks Band’s Grammy-winning Revelator debut in 2011, not to mention last year’s concert recording Everybody’s Talkin’, seem like a good-fun preamble.
There’s a refinement about this advance track from Make Up My Mind, due on August 20, 2013 from Sony, a taut sensibility that only comes from shared musical histories, shared musical passions and — maybe most importantly — shared time on the road. If you thought there was no way that the Tedeschi Trucks Band could get any better, think again.
Listen as Derek Trucks oversees a palette-cleansing Muscle Shoals-style groove, even before Susan Tedeschi adds a splash of hot sauce to the verse. By the time “Part of Me” reaches its lip-smacking chorus, it’s clear this is more than a tribute to their kudzu-covered funky forebears. It’s a celebration. Yep, my mind’s made up. They’ve been building up to this moment for some time now, that crossroads where everything comes together. With “Part of Me,” they’ve finally gotten there.
A soaring guitar solo, a heart-opening horn blast, a roaring return to that chorus, and “Part of Me” has set the stage for what promises to be the spiciest pot yet of TTB’s hand-made Southern music gumbo. Already, we get to savor a dash of R&B-kissed blues, a pinch of backwoods soul, with all of it held together by a thick roux of raw emotion, chin-wagging talent and battle-tested chemistry. Can’t wait.
