Something Else! sneak peek: Fergie Frederiksen, “Last Battle Of My War” from Any Given Moment (2013)

Fergie Frederiksen is the living embodiment of the old saw: If you’re going through hell, keep going. Rather than wallowing in any kind of pity, much less anger, the former Toto frontman is charging headlong into a hopeful future — with this new single as his tailwind.

After a stunning and inoperable liver cancer diagnosis, Frederiksen made an emotional return with 2011’s Happiness Is The Road — and was emboldened by the response. The results of this new-found sense of purpose can be found on Any Given Moment, as Frederiksen collaborates with Alessandro Del Vecchio, Bruce Gaitsch and others for a forthcoming Frontiers Records release.

He even returns to the Toto song “Angel Don’t Cry,” from the 1984 album Isolation, completing a circle that had long been broken.

Still, it will be hard to top the soaring hopefulness of this album-opening advance single, where Frederiksen — also a previous member, like fellow ex-Toto singer Bobby Kimball, of Louisiana’s LeRoux — seems not just to come to terms with everything he’s been through, but to put it behind him completely. The message of “Last Battle Of My War” is as simple as it is timeless: Don’t stop.
