The Friday Morning Listen – Southside Johnny & the Poor Fools – Songs From The Barn (2013)

Man, things sure have been upside-down as of late. The calendar has been saying “spring” for quite a while now, but apparently that calendar and the thermometer haven’t been on speaking terms. Just last week I woke up and had to turn on the furnace because it was hovering around 32 degrees at six in the morning. I’m not really one of those Yankee “The Furnace is off…and shall be so until November”-type of people, but it was kind of annoying to have to light that sucker up when what I really wanted to do was go out and enjoy my coffee on the back porch. No dice.

I just read that hurricane season starts this weekend. The thermometer must be ware of it because today it shot up almost into the 90s. And my air conditioners are where? Exactly, in the back of the closet, where all good air conditioners belong until at least the July 4th weekend. It’s just as well because my friends in the south — who love to inform me that my “hot” nights are really nothing more than “nice evenings” — would just think that I was wimping out for doing the chiller box installation so early.

And to mess things up even further, me and TheWife&trade are going out tomorrow night to see Southside Johnny & the Poor Fools. Mess things up? Well, the tradition around here is to see Southside & the Jukes to close out the summer. But heck, since we saw them not too long ago, what harm can come of yet another early showing? Besides this isn’t The Jukes. The Poor Fools are a Jukes subset (of sorts) with Southside, keyboardist Jeff Kazee, and whoever the heck else shows up. Sometimes it’s some Jukes, sometimes it’s Soozie Tyrell (who won’t be there because she’s still touring in Europe with the E Street Band), sometimes it’s Bruce Springsteen himself. (OK, not really…I’m just dropping a nickel into the Karma jar).

Rumour has it that this time around there will be a special guest Poor Fool going by the name of G.E. Smith. Will this mean that Southside will cover “Maneater”? Should I request it?

And one more thing: check out the video of The Poor Fools doing a cover of Randy Newman’s “Old Kentucky Home.” It is incredibly weird to see Mr. Lyon strumming an acoustic guitar. Upside-down? You bet.
