Get the weekend off to a rollicking good start with a stream of this classic Allen Toussaint gem, as reimagined by Robben Ford for his current Mascot Label Group release Bringing It Back Home. After all, “Everything I Do (Gonna Be Funky)” — with its raucous tag line “from now on!” — is perfect for Fridays, right?
This energetic cover is the newest single from an album that finds Ford — a former sideman with Joni Mitchell, George Harrison and Miles Davis — exploring a series of classic blues and R&B tracks, none perhaps more fun that this simmering gumbo of sounds associated with New Orleans.
[SOMETHING ELSE! INTERVIEW: Robben Ford stopped in for an entertaining discussion on his collaborations with George Harrison, Miles Davis, Joni Mitchell … and Kiss? Yes, friends, Kiss.]
Lee Dorsey had a Top 40 R&B hit with “Everything I Do (Gonna Be Funky)” in 1969, and it later would be used as the moniker for a sprawling 50-track retrospective of Toussaint’s work as a songwriter, pianist and producer — the capstone on a career that been associated with acts ranging from the Meters to Glen Campbell, and from Ernie K-Doe to LaBelle. Ford catches this titanic groove alongside his own all-star cast of players, including keyboardist Larry Goldings (John Scofield, James Taylor) and drummer Harvey Mason (Headhunters, George Benson).
With “Everything I Do (Gonna Be Funky)” as your day-off soundtrack, you can be assured that its title message will come true for you, too … from now on!
