Fans of the late Peter Banks will get another chance to hear his unique guitar stylings on a forthcoming cover of Steve Miller’s “Winter Time,” to be issued as part of a Miller tribute project produced by Billy Sherwood.
The founding Yes guitarist will be joined on the track by vocalist Sonja Kristina of Curved Air fame, and Sherwood on all other instruments. “Winter Time” was originally included on Miller’s 1977 effort Book of Dreams, an album that yielded the hits “Jet Airline” and “Junglelove.”
Banks had also contributed to the upcoming Prog Collective 2 album, which is being helmed by Sherwood, as well. Those were apparently the Yes co-founder’s final recordings before being felled by a heart attack last month at just 65.
Sherwood confirms, via Facebook, that the Prog Collective sequel is “in production as we speak. This was the second to last overdub I got from Banks. He did a great job, as he always did.”
Sherwood has done earlier all-star tribute projects for Cleopatra focusing on Pink Floyd, the Beatles and, last year, on Supertramp.
Here’s a look at some of the other notables who will be included on the Miller tribute: Vocalist Colin Moulding (XTC), on “Take the Money and Run”; vocalist John Wetton (Asia/UK/King Crimson) and Steve Stevens (Billy Idol) on “Jet Airliner”; keyboardist Derek Sherinian (Black Country Communion) on “Living the USA”; keyboardist Rick Wakeman (Yes) on “Abracadabra”; keyboardist Geoff Downes (Buggles/Yes/Asia) on “Swing Town”; vocalist Joe Lynn Turner (Rainbow/Deep Purple) on “Jungle Love”; vocalist Jimi Jamison (Survivor) and keyboardist Jordan Rudess (Dream Theater) on “Space Cowboy”; and vocalist Rod Argent (Zombies/Argent) and guitarist Steve Hillage on “Rock N’ Me Baby,” among others.
