You may think you’ve never heard of the McCrary Sisters, but you probably have anyway: The quartet was featured, for instance, on Dr. John’s Grammy-winning 2012 Dan Auerbach-produced triumph Locked Down. Regina, meanwhile, has appeared on a trio of Bob Dylan albums. Ann joined Regina on Patty Griffin’s Downtown Church. Three of the four appeared on Ray Stevens’ “Everything is Beautiful.”
Regina, Deborah and Ann are now being joined by Alfreda on what promises to be a breakout project — a cool blending of gospel, R&B, funk and soul called All the Way that’s due on April 30, 2013 from McC Records. Stream a track from their sophomore release here. Featuring 10 chugging originals like “Train,” plus covers of “Skin Deep” and “Right Where You Are,” All the Way, was produced by Kevin McKendree along with Tommy Sims. The Nashville-based siblings, whose father was the late Rev. Samuel McCrary of Fairfield Four fame, released their well-received debut album in 2010.
Ann got her start touring with her dad’s group as a child. She has appeared with gospel legends like the Winans and Yolanda Adams, and issued two solo albums of her own over the years. Deborah has performed with Elvis Presley, and with Isaac Hayes. Alfreda has issued a solo effort, and joined Regina and Ann on recordings with Wynonna Judd and Johnny Cash. More recently, the McCrary Sisters joined Dylan for an August 2012 appearance in Cincinnati. Regina had earlier toured and recorded with the legendary singer-songwriter over a period that included the Slow Train Coming, as well as Saved and Shot of Love. She’s released a solo project, as well, and performed with both Stevie Wonder and with Presley.
The sisters have also been featured artists on Paul Thorn’s What the Hell is Goin’ On, Buddy Miller’s Universal United House of Prayer and on Kevin Gordon’s Gloryland, among others.
