Reedman Nik Turner of Hawkwind fame is making the most of his on-going trip to America, laying down tracks for new studio projects, making a series of appearances at SXSW and, tonight, appearing live with a former member of Megadeth.
Chris Poland, part of Megadeth’s influential first pair of albums, is welcoming Turner on stage at the Baked Potato in Studio City, California, with his current jazz-fusion band OHM.
“I’m fronting his band for one of sets,” Turner tells us. “He recorded some stuff for my solo album, he did some backing tracks for me, and it went so well. I did everything on a first-time take. I found it very easy. So, they invited me to join them tonight. I’m looking for it, because the recording I did with him was tracks he’d done already, and I just sort of improvised with them.”
During this extended stateside visit, Turner has also laid down some tracks for Prog Collective 2, and for a forthcoming album by former Star Trek film and TV star William Shatner — both of which are being helmed by Yes alum Billy Sherwood for Cleopatra.
Turner appeared on a track with Rick Wakeman for the original Fusion Syndicate album, and on Nektar’s newest release, as well. Sherwood is also producing a new original album by Turner, which will likewise appear on Cleopatra.
Turner earlier performed Hawkwind’s 1973 album The Space Ritual Alive in Liverpool and London in its entirety on March 10, 2013 at the Echoplex in Los Angeles, with Jurgen Engler of Die Krupps, Nicky Garrett of the UK Subs, and Geoff Miles of the punk band Chelsea.
