This new stream, courtesy of the Mascot Label Group, finds the five-time Grammy nominated Robben Ford taking on a Bob Dylan classic, as part of the bluesy new roots-rock project Bringing It Back Home due February 19, 2013.
Appearing alongside organist Larry Goldings, drummer Harvey Mason, trombonist Steve Baxter and bassist David Piltch, Ford explores both the expected (“Bird’s Nest Bound,” from Charley Patton), and a series of stunningly realized tunes from the Louisiana music tradition. That includes both Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Allen Toussaint’s “Everything I Do Gonna Be Funky” and Willie West’s “Fair Child.”
[SOMETHING ELSE! INTERVIEW: Robben Ford discusses this new album, joining Harrison and Davis on tour, and performing with Mitchell at her supernova moment.]
Ford, who has served stints as a sideman with Joni Mitchell, George Harrison, Miles Davis and Kiss, used a classic 1963 Epiphone Riviera guitar, so there would be a commonality of sound through Bringing It Back Home.
This is Ford’s ninth solo album. He has also issued four live sets along the way, three albums with the Blue Line, and another nine sides as part of the Ford Brothers.
