“We No Who U R,” the lead single from the 15th studio album by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, is this sharp left from Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! — a darkly forboding, deeply malevolent meditation whose central image is a stoic tree reaching up to the morning light.
Whereas 2008’s Lazarus, Cave’s most recent album with the Bad Seeds, was dominated by churning, two-note garage rock, “We No Who U R” points toward a more contemplative mood surrounding Push the Sky Away, which is set for release on February 18, 2013.
People have used the words “strange” and “beauty” so often to describe Cave’s work that it should have become a tattered cliche by now. But as Cave chillingly intones “and we know there’s no need to forgive again” alongside a ruminating flute, there it is: this … strange beauty.
A tour of their native Australia will follow the release of Push the Sky Away. An American tour will begin on March 14, 2013, in Dallas.
