Here on the new album from Sarah Maisel, we’re serenaded with interpretations from a broad scope of genres.
The method in which Sarah performs these tunes is strictly that of the easy-listening mold. But what causes the songs to be different from the usual undertakings of such a style is the constant presence of a ukulele. And what an expert player Sarah is, as she picks, strums and caresses the instrument with tender loving care. Her crystal clear vocals are just as pleasing as they are cozy, intimate and tailor made for radio.
Produced by ace guitarist Tim Coffman, In the Moment (Rolltop Records) radiates relentlessly to a sun-kissed sheen that’s both relaxing and invigorating. Be it Stevie Wonder’s “For Once In My Life,” Charlie Chaplin’s “Smile” or James Taylor’s “Carolina On My Mind,” Sarah revisits the tunes with expressive insight.
A pair of instrumentals, “Ukulele Lady” and George Gershwin’s “A Foggy Day (In London Town)” are further dazzling diamonds heard on the record, along with Jim Croce’s “I’ll Have To Say I Love You In a Song” and John Lennon and Paul McCartney’s “I Will.” The mood is light and happy, complemented by a quaint but decidedly hip aura. An ideal album to chill out to, In the Moment is easy-listening bliss at its best.
