Some non sequiturs make no sense, like jumbo shrimp. Others, like Glambilly, couldn’t be more perfect. This San Antonio-based threesome plays rootsy punk rock, sounding at times more than a little downhome — but with nary a trace of countrypolitan refinery. That makes for a sound, and an album, is that is consistently, brilliantly surprising. Check out the nasty little groove on “Bite The Bed,” a standout cut due on Aug. 16 as part of Glambilly’s Saustex Media release White BBQ Sauce which finds Frank talking his way through what seems like an ugly putdown: “Yeah, girl, looks like you’ve gained a few pounds since I’ve been away — got lazy,” he growls. “Been, uh, cooking with a little too much grease in the skillet.” Then, after a few moments of banging bass and bashing drums, Frank adds, with a greasy salaciousness: “And that’s the way I like it!” Elsewhere, there’s the album-opening “City of Angels” — which sounds like a scroungy country-rock aside from Exile on Main Street, with all of the early-morning narcotic danger that implies — and a weirdo moment of phone-message verite called “Pablo.” Could a spoken-word, ass-whipping groover called “I Must Be the Devil” be all that far behind?
