Essentially a one-man band, Richard Turgeon specializes in a coalition of roots music, pop and hard rock that really hits the spot. Go Deep, the San Francisco-based artist’s third album, serves as a triumphant testimony to his purpose and vision.
Blessed with an authoritative and accessible voice tipping towards the southern side of the stream, Richard Turgeon delivers his keenly composed songs with attitude and energy. Should guiding spirits be cited among the material presented on Go Deep, the 12-string jangle of Tom Petty and Gin Blossoms – as well as the heavier sounds of Nirvana and Pearl Jam – are readily recognized.
Go Deep (Kool Kat Musik) is flush with lively performances. Songs such “If You Leave” and “The One That Got Away” perfectly portray Turgeon’s expertise for wrapping his enthused lung power around compact hooks set against the backdrop of zippy harmonies.
“Beware of God” seesaws to and fro with choppy reggae grooves and dark and gritty textures, while the super-catchy “Keanu Reeves” is a nice ode to the noted actor. Elsewhere, the exuberant “Lost and Found” weighs in as a true-blue country-pop nugget.
Go Deep further reveals what a great guitarist Richard Turgeon is. His timing, tone and rhythm is right on the mark. The way those strapping melodies strain through his amped up songs is priceless
