Toto, “If You Belong to Me” from Tambu (1995): Toto Tuesdays

“If You Belong to Me” somehow seems at a disadvantage. A medium-paced Toto ballad, it features yet another strong Steve Lukather vocal, tasty piano and synthesizer elements from David Paich and prominent percussion from Michael Fisher.

Co-written by Lukather, Paich and Stan Lynch, “If You Belong to Me” also continues the lyrical heft displayed on the prior songs from 1995’s Tambu. There’s a brief Steve Lukather slide guitar solo too, and that serves to reinforce the melody.

“If You Belong To Me” even fits into this album’s theme of loss, but the song is not an essential addition. On another AOR band’s studio project, it would have been a highlight, possibly even a hit. On Toto’s Tambu, it’s a song I usually skip.

Toto Tuesdays is a song-by-song feature that explores the band’s rich musical history. They returned with three new songs on 2018’s ’40 Trips Around the Sun.’
