Something Else! sneak peek: Joe Bonamassa, “Different Shades of Blue” (2014)

Back in April, we took notice of a new song blues-rock boss Joe Bonamassa unveiled during a French TV program for an upcoming studio album, to be his follow-up to 2012’s Driving Towards The Daylight. Since that time, it’s been revealed that this new disc will be called Different Shades of Blue and it’s coming out on September 23, 2014.

This album promises to break out a bit more than usual from the normal blues parameters with Bonamassa having huddled together with the likes of Journey’s Jonathan Cain for writing new tunes, as well as with Nashville crackerjack composers James House (Diamond Rio, Dwight Yoakam, Martina McBride), and Jerry Flowers (Keith Urban). Indeed, Different Shades of Blue will be the first Bonamassa album with no covers on it at all, just originals.

“Different Shades of Blue” is also the name of the first advance track from this album, and today you can view the official video of that song, above. It’s a pretty nice display of Bonamassa’s soulful side, his underrated vocals nestling right alongside his smoky lead guitar. Not too dissimilar from the title track of his previous longer player, but “Different Shades of Blue” features the sweet tone of his golden Les Paul.

We’ve now gotten two tastes of Different Shades of Blue, and so far there’s nothing to suggest it’s going to disappoint Joe Bonamassa’s fans. September 23 can’t get here soon enough.
