Exclusive stream: Supertramp’s Carl Verheyen, “Bloody Well Right” (2014)

Fans of Supertramp will quickly place Carl Verheyen, whose tenure with the band dates back to 1985, though they might not initially recognize this terrific cover from the guitarist’s new solo album, Mustang Run.

Gone, you’ll notice, is Rick Davies’ familiar song-opening Wurlitizer, replaced by an angular acoustic. Verheyen is then joined by a squalling sax from fellow Supertramp contributor John Helliwell, setting a gritty new tone for this update of his main group’s breakout 1974 single — and that’s before a growling take on the original vocal has even begun. It’s a brilliant reimagining of a song you probably thought you knew inside and out after its Top 40 Billboard run.

The lineup on this exclusive advance stream is rounded out by Jesse Siebenberg on B-3 (who followed his father Bob into the Supertramp fold), Walfredo Reyes Jr. on drums and Dave Marotta on bass. Verheyen is joined elsewhere on the newly released Mustang Run by an all-star cast that includes Chad Wackerman, Stuart Hamm, Bill Evans, Gregg Bissonette, Jerry Goodman and Simon Phillips, among others.

His progressive instrumental project features 10 other original tracks. Verheyen has also worked with Joe Jackson; Allan Holdsworth appeared on his 1988 solo debut, No Borders. Hamm will be joining Verheyen on a tour this fall, too.
