One Track Mind: Days Between Stations with XTC’s Colin Moulding, “The Man Who Died Two Times” (2014)

Colin Moulding’s unlikely retirement has been followed by an equally unlikely return, as the former XTC star’s long-distance musical relationship with producer Billy Sherwood continues to bear the most interesting of fruit.

Moulding, who’d been out of music since 2007, made his first major step back as part of the 2012’s Sherwood-helmed Prog Collective, appearing on “Check Point Karma” with Rick Wakeman. Now comes a starring role with Days Between Stations, on a newly released video for Moulding’s featured vocal on the anthemic “The Man Who Died Two Times.”

“He sent me the track, and it was right up my alley,” Moulding says of Sherwood. “It was pure, straight-ahead pop. I thought: ‘Yep, I can do that.’ So, here we are.”

“The Man Who Died Two Times” is Days Between Station’s first video, and it supports the rare light-hearted moment — and an important inflection point — on the new Los Angeles-based prog-pop band’s well-received current release In Extremis. The video was produced and directed by Heidi Hornbacher, and filmed and edited by Erik Nielsen.

Sherwood, who co-wrote the track and produced In Extremis, sings backup and plays drums; King Crimson’s Tony Levin is on bass; and DBS members Oscar Frederico Fuentes Bills and Sepand Samzadeh are on synths and guitars, respectively. Album cover artist Paul Whitehead, perhaps most famous for his work on Genesis’ early-1970s albums Trespass, Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot projects, returned to play a role in the video, as well.

“I’m surprised that Billy knows so many people,” Moulding adds. “He’s a man of many parts, isn’t he? [Laughs.] But I was glad to be included. ”
