Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour makes surprise on-stage appearance with Ben Watt

Yes, that’s David Gilmour on the new solo venture from Ben Watt of Everything But the Girl fame. And yes, that was him on stage with Watt last night at Islington Assembly Hall in London.

Gilmour appeared on Hendra, the new folky Watt recording, with Bernard Butler of Suede — and Butler sat in, as well. Gilmour played lap steel on “The Levels,” then engaged in a thrilling moment of guitar interplay with Watt and Butler on “Young Man’s Game,” embedded above.

And yes, we said: “Folky.” Watt’s solo debut Hendra is absolutely nothing like the sleek pop of his old band.

Gilmour also reappeared for Watt’s overnight encore, helping out on “Spring.” It marks another step in the former Pink Floyd guitarist’s more recent reemergence. He is reportedly at work on the long-awaited follow up to 2006’s On an Island.
