‘The next one will be much more guitar-driven’: Kiss’ Paul Stanley eyes solo follow up to Live to Win

Paul Stanley has issued just two solo albums, his self-titled 1978 debut (part of a quartet of such releases from Kiss) and 2006’s decidedly more pop-rock leaning Live to Win.

In a sign of just how far afield this album was from his regular work with Kiss, Stanley actually toured Live to Win with the house band from CBS’s Rock Star TV show. They performed an album in which half the tracks were written with Desmond Child and Holly Knight, both of whom had been involved with some of the least satisfying moments ever issued under the Kiss banner.

So, the question of whether Stanley is ready for another solo project has to be tempered with questions about his intent. The good news is, he tells Nashville Scene that he’s done with Live to Win-style pop: “The next one I guarantee will be much more guitar-driven. Live to Win was really me wanting to push the envelope of what people wouldn’t expect from me. But my next one would hearken back way more to the first, I’m sure.”

Desmond Child had earlier co-writes on 1984’s Animalize (“I’ve Had Enough”), 1985’s Asylum (“King of the Mountain”), 1987’s Crazy Nights (“Bang Bang You”) and 1989’s Hot in the Shade (“Hide Your Heart”), while Knight collaborated with Stanley on “Raise Your Glasses” from 1998’s Psycho Circus.
