‘They will be songs that people know’: Glenn Hughes says California Breed considering expanded live set

With tour dates presumably looming, the question for the newly formed California Breed quickly becomes: What will they play, beyond their original music? After all, the group includes Glenn Hughes, who’s been in Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Black Country Communion — and Jason Bonham, who’s also worked with BCC, Foreigner and Led Zeppelin.

“This band has been about new music, but now we are talking about what should we do, as well,” Hughes tells Metal Talk. “We’ll obviously have to look back at our back catalogs, and choose selected songs that people would want to hear. We don’t know what that is yet, because we haven’t got to that point — but they will be songs that people know.”

Hughes was in Deep Purple from 1973-1976, and appeared on 1986’s Seventh Star with Black Sabbath. He has also been in Trapeze and Hughes/Thrall over the years. Bonham played on Jimmy Page’s 1988 album Outrider, then filled in for his father in Led Zeppelin later that year at an Atlantic Records anniversary event. He also played with Zeppelin in 1995 and (most memorably) in 2007, while working with Foreigner from 2004-08.

Hughes and Bonham were in Black Country Communion together from 2009-2012. They then co-founded California Breed with the youthful Andrew Wyatt — who is 39 years Hughes’ junior. Fifteen years separate Hughes and Bonham, as well. “I don’t hear three generations of musicians here,” Hughes counters. “I just hear a band that is floating on top of the water, you know?”
