‘I have to listen to it instead’: Hall and Oates star can’t go for music in bed

It might not be the first question that you’d ask a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer. Then again, ask just about any other similarly recognized legend, and you might not get such a no-BS answer, either.

A reporter with TMZ caught up with John Oates, who was just inducted into the hall as one half of Hall and Oates on Thursday night, and was moved to ask him which song was playing when he first took a woman to bed. You might have expected one of the smooth old-school cats like Marvin Gaye or Al Green. Or, in a nod to his Philadelphia roots, someone like the Delfonics or the Stylistics.

Nope, nope, nope and nope. Instead, Oates admits: “I didn’t lose my virginity to any song because when I hear music I couldn’t even get a hard-on — because I have to listen to it instead.”

That said, Oates acknowledged that Hall and Oates’ music might have ultimately become the soundtrack to someone else’s teenage dream — calling that number of people both “incalculable” and “fantastic,” even while finally admitting that this whole line of question was “really unusual.”
