‘I like to grow’: For restless veteran Glenn Hughes, California Breed is a chance to try something new

Glenn Hughes is not about to start comparing eras. Not when he’s been part of legendary outfits like Deep Purple and Black Sabbath. Still, he thinks he’s found something in California Breed that’s both a worthy successor to Black Country Communion — Hughes’ most recent project — and something that will engage him despite more than four decades in the business.

Of course, some eras are easier to summon than others.

“I don’t remember the 1980s,” Hughes says, during an interview for SixxSense. “I really don’t remember them. So, coming from my sobriety period in the early 1990s, what I think I’ve done is listen to a lot of music since then — and let it come into me. I like to grow. I like to listen, and learn. I’m never going to be not learning. ‘Til the day I die, I want to live and learn. That’s what I’m about.”

Black Country Communion ended with a disagreement over touring with guitarist Joe Bonamassa. But Hughes’ relationship with BCC drummer Jason Bonham led directly to California Breed. The trio, which releases its self-titled first album on May 20, 2014 via Fronters Records, is rounded out by guitarist Andrew Watt.

“We can look back at our lives and say: ‘Well, that was a great moment,’ or ‘that was wonderful,'” Hughes adds. “Right now is the moment again for me. I mean, there have been some mistakes. There have been some embarrassments. There’s been darkness. And now I see this glow. It comes from within, man. I feel this is a special moment for me. Forty four years, I’ve been doing this now. It’s special.”
