One Track Mind: Julian Lennon, “Guess It Was Me [Acoustic]” from Everything Changes (2014)

Julian Lennon’s stripped-bare version of “Guess It Was Me,” just released as part of a new song-by-song video project for his most recent studio project Everything Changes, more clearly defines its message of personal empowerment. There is much to regret, Lennon says, but little time for doing so. Change can only be effected when we stop ruminating and get on with it.

At the same time, he completely altered the song’s original atmospherics, which grew from an elegaic piano-driven start into a perfect pop construct with this dreamy, Beatles-influenced feel — topped by a perfectly attenuated stop-start vocal in the chorus to this thunderously trippy electric guitar solo.

As much as Lennon seemed to be embracing an obvious songwriting DNA strand on the initial take, this one puts his voice — not his influences — front and center.

Of course, Lennon has been more involved with charitable efforts of late than he has with music making, and that only adds resonance to this journey toward self-awareness. Everything Changes was, in fact, Lennon’s first studio effort since 1998’s Photograph Smile.
