One Track Mind: Arc Iris, “Whiskey Man” from Arc Iris (2014)

I hadn’t had the feeling for a long time: that crestfallen heaviness of learning that a band had broken up. It’s something that really used to hit me when I was a kid. Attachments to bands and their music were particularly powerful, and when a breakup was announced…it felt personal. You grow into adulthood and a band going away? Maybe it’s not that big of a deal.

When I first learned that Jocie Adams had left The Low Anthem, I was back there again. They’d become one of my favorite bands over the past few years, combining a heartfelt Americana with some tremendous vocal harmonies. And they were gone?

Well, singer Adams has gone on to form Arc Iris. Taking on a more front and center role in this group, Adams leads her cohorts through chamber pop arrangements that glitter with soaring harmonies, cinched tight with winding ribbons of melody.

And I absolutely love Jocie’s description of what this new band means to her: “Arc Iris encapsulates that sense of the future for me, a sign of something beautiful that will hold my hand for a long time.” If “Whiskey Man” is any indication, the future of Arc Iris will be an interesting one.

Arc Iris will release their debut album on April 1st 2014 on Anti Records.

Arc Iris is:

Jocie Adams: lyrics, orchestral arrangements, crotales, clarinet, and whatever else she can get her hands on
Zach Tenorio-Miller: piano
Mike Irwin: trumpet
Robin Ryczek: cello
Ray Belli: drums
Max Johnson: bass
Charlie Rose: trombone, steel banjo
