‘I can’t count on him’: David Crosby says Crosby Stills Nash and Young may, or may not, happen again

David Crosby isn’t counting on — or counting out — another formation as Crosby Stills Nash and Young. It all depends, as usual, on what happens with the unpredictable Neil Young.

“It’s difficult to know,” Crosby tells Access Atlanta. “He already told us once that he was going to (be back with us) and changed his mind, and now he’s making noises that he wants to do it again.”

The stunningly talented foursome stormed to the top of the album charts in 1970 with Deja Vu, a recording that spawned a trio of Top 40 singles. CSNY then quickly scattered for solo projects, before trying to record a follow up — and failing — several different times over the ensuing years. It would be 1988, with American Dream, before Crosby Stills Nash and Young issued a second full-length recording.

Another decade would then pass before the appearance of a third album, called Looking Forward. They haven’t toured together as a foursome since 2006, though Crosby, Stills and Nash have consistently collaborated in various configurations — up to and including a current CSN tour.

Even so, Crosby, who just released his first solo effort in two decades, holds no ill will toward Young: “God bless Neil,” he says. “I love him and I love working with him because he so completely wants to push the edge, but he’s a very mercurial guy. I can’t count on him, but I do love to play with him.”
