‘They are all there with me’: Yoko Ono’s unique philosophy eases pain of living without John Lennon

Yoko Ono still lives in the same building where her husband John Lennon was gunned down by a crazed fan in 1980. In the same apartment they shared. For that matter, in the same space where she raised her son Sean before he grew up and moved away.

And, yet, Ono doesn’t live inside those memories, she says.

“It’s a place now, so I don’t live there thinking about the past,” Ono tells Melbourne’s Herald Sun, “because of course the past is the present, as well. So I’m living with John as well as my son, who left and who has his independent situation. But I feel that they are all there with me.”

This unique philosophy, that time is a continuum rather than a sequence of events, informs her new retrospective artbook, Yoko Ono: Infinite Universe at Dawn, as well.

“I have an objective observation of the past,” Ono says, “but at the same time, I don’t believe in the difference between past, present and future. I think it’s all now. … That makes it easier to deal with things — to know that, actually, it’s not all different. It’s all the same.”
