‘Preferential treatment towards artists they like': Kiss’ Paul Stanley keeps up Hall of Fame argument

Paul Stanley isn’t letting the Hall of Fame get the last word. Joel Peresman has asserted that the hall limited Kiss’ induction honorees to the band’s original lineup because successive members simply took up earlier personas — comments Stanley now says are “nonsense” and “half truths.”

Peresman, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation’s CEO, told Billboard today that inductions are on a case-by-case basis. With some bands — presumably, say, the Grateful Dead or Fleetwood Mac, who have multiple generations of members inducted — the totality of their careers are considered. With others, including 2014 inductees Heart and with Kiss this year, there is a classic period that Peresman says most people agree produced the heart of their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame candidacy.

Stanley counters that Bruce Kulick never wore makeup — his own or Ace Frehley’s — during a decade-plus stint with Kiss. Eric Carr, another long-time member, had a distinctive character of his own, completely different from Peter Criss.

As such, Stanley asserts, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s latest comments are just another “attempt to restore its questionable credibility.” He adds that their inconsistencies underscore a pattern of “favoritism and preferential treatment towards artists they like,” leading to Kiss’ decision to avoid performing during this April’s ceremonies: “Let’s just accept the truth as it is and move on.”
