In case there was any doubt, Walter Becker is a smart ass. Of course if you are a Steely Dan fan you’ve known that for decades.
The song, “Somebody’s Saturday Night” only goes to confirm that he hasn’t lost his lyrical edge. Unlike the proceeding song, “Do You Remember The Name” where the protagonist laments his long dead love, in “Somebody’s Saturday Night” our hero has taken his Viagra and is ready for the prowl. As luck would have it, our man finds many prospects however they seem to be of questionable quality (“She looked good in the available light. She was somebody’s Saturday night. She said it ain’t wrong, but it’s not quite right. Guess its somebody’s Saturday night”). Still, he is inspired by the chase. In fact it seems the desperation of the chase is what the song is all about.
Becker’s biting but brief guitar solo does a great job of simulating that lusty anticipation and is tastefully supported by the integrated and expressive guitar parts of Dean Parks and Jon Herington. Once again the cast of players selected by Becker play like a cohesive band. This is due to the fact that the core of the band has toured with Becker (and Fagen) extensively for years.
Larry Klein’s talented wife Luciana Souza plays percussion on her Brazilian pandeiro and vocalists Carmen Carter, Windy Wagner, James Taylor vocalist Kate Markowitz and Steely Dan vocalist Cindy Mizelle and Carolyn Leonhart-Escoffery get to lay on their talents in a sassy and emotional backing chorus.
Just when you think Becker has given you all he can, you hear the next track, “Darkling Down” and are even more impressed, but let’s save that one for next Sunday.
