‘He’s taught me a lot’: David Crosby partnership with long-lost son sparked musical comeback

For David Crosby, his long-awaited Croz was more than a chance to jump-start his dormant solo career. It was another chance to connect with his son, James Raymond.

“It wouldn’t have happened without him,” Crosby tells WWCT, relaying a touching story of redemption that found a father sleeping on the couch of a once-unknown son — with music as a catalyst.

Given up for adoption when he was born, James Raymond didn’t connect with his rock-star dad until he was about 30 years old. “At that point,” Crosby adds, “he had been a musician for 20 years — a working musician, and a schooled musician. He’s a guy who can read and write charts. A brilliant, brilliant cat. Those meetings don’t usually go that well, but ours did. He was very kind. He gave me a chance to earn my way, to earn his respect.”

Their time together hasn’t been a one-way street, Crosby says. The two-time Hall of Famer with both the Byrds and then with Crosby Stills and Nash says he’s learned as much as he’s taught. “[It goes] both ways,” Crosby says. “Both ways. He is a far superior musician to me, and he’s getting to at least as good — if not better — lyricist now. He keeps growing. He’s taught me a lot.”

Crosby’s musical partnership with James Raymond began in 1996, with CPR — a group that also included Jefferson Starship’s Jeff Pevar. They released a pair of studio albums through 2004. Crosby’s son has since worked on a Crosby and Nash recording, and served as a co-producer and co-writer on the newly released Croz, dad’s first release in two decades.
