‘The rest of the day, you’re confused’: Bruce Springsteen still finds purpose on the stage

Listening to the songs, Bruce Springsteen might present as someone steeled with both determination and a sense of purpose. Actually, he says, doubt surrounds him the same as anyone else — until he takes up the microphone to sing.

“My music, and what I do on stage, is usually the best of myself,” Springsteen tells Le Grand Journal. “The rest of the day, you’re confused, struggling along like everybody else.”

The seemingly ageless Springsteen will join his E Street Band for 15 announced tour dates across the U.S., beginning on April 8 in Cincinnati, after a series of shows in New Zealand, Australia and South Africa.

“Your higher self steps forward, very often, in art,” Springsteen says of his experience performing. “It’s nice when that can happen in politics, in relationships, anywhere. Of course, we don’t have as much access to it, and as often as we would like. I think there’s a struggle to keep that on the high side.”

While still in the middle of these latest tour dates, Springsteen will issue a four-song EP of music called American Beauty. The project, featuring previously unreleased originals, arrives on vinyl in time for Record Store Day on April 19, 2014.

Springsteen’s most recent album, High Hopes, arrived just over a year ago.
