‘We start work in June, I think’: Ex-Yes frontman Jon Anderson’s new band could include Jean-Luc Ponty

Some 10 years after splitting with Yes, Jon Anderson has started talking about forming another band again — and, as he revealed during an autograph session with fans, the lineup could include a certified prog-rock and jazz-fusion legend.

“You’re the first people to know,” Anderson said after a recent solo show, “but I’m going to get a band together with Jean-Luc Ponty.”

The violinist is perhaps best known in rock circles for his early-1970s work with Frank Zappa. Ponty also collaborated with Elton John on 1972’s Honky Chateau, and toured with Journey’s Steve Smith and Genesis’ Daryl Steurmer. Ponty has also released a series of well-received fusion-focused solo albums, while sitting in with Mahavishnu Orchestra and with Return to Forever, as well.

Meanwhile, Anderson’s most notable previous collaborations with a violinist include the title track from Charlie Bisharat’s 1993 album Along the Amazon. Last year, Anderson also contributed to Bill Kilpatrick’s Sibelius-influenced Violin Stories, a seven-movement ballet composition for violin and orchestra.

“I’m going to work with one of the great violin players,” Anderson enthuses. “We start work in June, I think. Then we’re going to tour next year. I love the violin.”
