For the past decade or so, Glowfriends have been thrilling global audiences with their bedazzling brand of pop music. Based in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the band once again has crafted a surefire showtopper with their latest album Gather Us Together, which will not only draw praise from veteran fans, but is further guaranteed to impress newcomers.

Boasting a unique configuration, Glowfriends features a trio of husbands and wives, with the gifted architects being April and Adam Zimont, Mark Andrew and Molly Klutts- Morris, and JW and Jenn Hendrix. It’s often been said close relationships create telepathic bonds, and such is the situation with this band whose chemistry is stunningly faultless.

Fronted by April’s cool, calm, and collected vocals, the Glowfriends are modern day shoegazers. Strains of bands like My Bloody Valentine, Ride, and Trembling Blue Stars seep through their self-composed songs, but their introspective and inventive lyrics and hooks are theirs alone. Here on Gather Us Together (JAM Recordings), the subject matter addresses tragedy and the questioning and handling of dark issues. A few years ago, April was in a car accident and suffered a head injury, which influenced the gist of the album.

Constructed of guitars bouncing to and fro between jangly and crushing, and rhythms that rise and fall, Gather Us Together manages a maze of multiple moods. The warm and whispery air of “Telescoming” eventually erupts into a flurry of distorted feedback, “There Is Grace” is sultry and serene, and “Without A Sound” is iced with a touch of country stylings.

Simultaneously twinkling and throbbing with force, “Astonished,” “Scrap The Chords,” and “Tremors” capture Glowfriends rocking their shoes and socks off with focus and determination.

A beautiful psychedelic-tinged aura, encompassed by melodies ranging from dreamy to heavy, rest in every corner of Gather Us Together, leading the set to be an experience you won’t soon forget. These are the kind of tunes that really pull the listener in. Assured and arresting, Glowfriends have a deep and sincere understanding of the music they play, and “Gather Us Together” is a testimony to their dedication to their art. A bang-up job all the way!
