‘Silver Train’ memories: Rolling Stones pull out a rare 40-year-old deep cut at Tokyo Dome

Last night at the Tokyo Dome, the Rolling Stones pulled out a four-decades-old chestnut after fans voted “Silver Train” from 1973’s Goats Head Soup into the setlist. The Stones had last played the song live on a tour later in ’73.

Mick Taylor, guitarist on both the original studio and most recent live versions of the track, joined the Stones on stage. He also sat in for “Slipping Away,” “Midnight Rambler” and the finale of “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” Last night marked the Rolling Stones’ second sold-out date at the Tokyo Dome; they’re set to return again on Thursday as the “14 on Fire” tour continues.

“Silver Train,” about a dalliance with a prostitute, had actually been demoed during the sessions for 1970’s Sticky Fingers. Johnny Winter heard an early version and included a version on his album Still Alive and Well, which predated Goat’s Head Soup. Later, the Black Crowes also covered the song.

Fans were encouraged to vote via RollingStones.com, an official app or through social media pages like Facebook and Twitter. The balloting apparently was so close that the Rolling Stones also included runner-up vote-getter “You Got Me Rocking,” from 1994’s Voodoo Lounge, as well.
