‘A song everybody can relate to’: Deep cut from Julian Lennon’s newest album strikes a chord

Julian Lennon’s long-awaited Everything Changes solo project, expanded by two songs upon its stateside release in 2013, is stuffed with meaningful moments — arriving as it did more than a decade after his last album.

He’s already released a pair of singles, including “Lookin’ 4 Luv” in 2011 and then 2013’s “Someday,” which featured guest vocals from Steven Tyler of Aerosmith. While both were well received, it seems that a deep cut — the album-closing “Beautiful” — has had the deepest resonance.

“Probably the one that is, I guess, the most heartfelt and the one that I’ve seen has really hit people hard,” Lennon tells Jed Leiber, “is ‘Beautiful.’ It’s a song about people who have passed in our lives. And it’s about the fact that we all come from stardust, and we all go back to stardust — and that we all are part of everything. We really are. Even though we’ve lost people that we’ve loved in our lives, they still exist. They still live on within the ether, and within our emotions, spirits, hearts and souls.”

Though it’s easy enough to connect this theme to the loss of his own father, Lennon points out that the things dealt with in “Beautiful” go well beyond something so personal as the murder of Beatles legend John Lennon: “It’s a song that everybody can relate to,” he adds.

Lennon, who has begun tandem careers in philanthropy and photography, also sang on Aerosmith’s most recent release Music from Another Dimension, and helped Glenn Hughes in the early stages of forming his new band California Breed, with fellow Black Country Communion vet Jason Bonham.
