‘It’s not going to be possible': Crimson ProjeKCt’s Kiev date cancelled as Ukraine unrest continues

Unrest across Ukraine has forced Crimson ProjeKCt to put off the second date of its upcoming tour. The group is set to play the first of 20-plus scheduled concerts at Tel Aviv on Wednesday, March 5, 2014, with shows continuing through April 2014 in the UK, Russia, France and Italy, among others.

The tour was to bring them to Kiev on Thursday, March 6. For Tony Levin, a King Crimson stalwart who has a special family connection to Ukraine, the postponement comes as an emotional blow: “We have been looking forward to the concert in Kiev in spite of the difficulties there,” Levin says, “and until today we were planning on going through with it — despite advisories from the U.S. State Deptartment not to go. But it’s not going to be possible at this time.”

Crimson ProjeKCt also includes with fellow King Crimson member Pat Mastelotto and former member Adrian Belew. Belew’s Power Trio combines with Levin’s Stick Men group to form the ProjeKCt. They perform both together and apart, presenting King Crimson music and select other catalog items.

Levin says the group hopes to reschedule a Kiev date this summer. In the meantime, he looks to return as part of Peter Gabriel’s touring group in May.

“I personally have a deep connection with Ukraine,” Levin says. “I have been to the towns where my mother and grandparents were born, and I’ve enjoyed the beauty of Kiev both as a touring player and as a tourist. For me, it won’t be long until I get to come again but I’m sad that we weren’t able to bring the Crimson ProjeKCt music to Kiev at this pivotal time: I know first hand of the passion people have there for the music they love. My hope is, of course, that the current problems get worked out in a way that’s best for the people of Ukraine.”
