‘Careful what you show your kids’: Van Halen’s David Lee Roth back for Season 2 of The Roth Show

David Lee Roth kicked off the second season of his webcast series The Roth Show with another round of free-associative ramblings filled with personal memories, giddy riffs and strangely resonant connections from across his life. All of it, through a strange series of turns, usually leads back to his time in Van Halen.

“You do tend to re-write the same symphony over and over and over again,” Roth says, “spiritually as well as musically.”

He connects elements of Van Halen’s “Panama” video to the Broadway production of Peter Pan starring Mary Martin. “I never told them where I got the idea,” Roth says. “Careful what you show your kids.” And then he keeps going. Along the way, West Side Story, Elton John’s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, the Rat Pack, WINS radio, Clint Eastwood, Andy Warhol, the Nicholas Brothers in Stormy Weather and the Berry Brothers in Lady Be Good make appearances in a nearly 45-minute narrative.

He actually started the episode off with a run-on sentence, a clue to where things were headed on this fun ride: “Welcome back — how do my socks look? — to The Roth Show!”
