Not only is “Such A Lovely Child/Burned” a great single, but it also carries historical weight, as Glenn Frey was the lead singer of the Mushrooms.
Bob Seger, who at the time fronted the Last Heard, also authored both sides of the Michigan band’s one and only disc. The other members of the Mushrooms included Bill Barnes on guitar, Doug Gunch on guitar, Jeff Burrows on keyboards, and Larry Mintz on drums.
Peppered with a vertigo-inducing Middle Eastern motif and complemented by clipped British-inflected vocals, “Such A Lovely Child” (Hideout Records) entails the profile of a prim and proper girl who grows up to be a lonely old lady — sounding something like the Kinks on a psychedelic sojourn. Then there’s “Burned,” a song fired by youthful vim and vigor. With its perky breaks and kicking rhythms, this track stands as a simple but hooky garage pop pleaser. Despite the fact the Mushrooms didn’t set the world alight with their sole record, they were a regular and respected fixture on the local live scene. Glenn Frey, of course, later acquired platinum-plus success with the Eagles, as did Bob Seger with the Silver Bullet Band.
