One Track Mind: Andy Summers’ Circa Zero, “Levitation” from Circus Hero (2014)

The surprise isn’t that Andy Summers — the Police’s guitar-playing lyrical heart — is back with a rock band. It’s only: What took him so long?

Summers has formed Circa Zero with vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Rob Giles, who was being managed by a friend of Summers’ while playing with LA’s Rescues. “Levitation,” the advance track from the debut recording Circus Hero, provides an early taste of their driving, straight-ahead sound.

If anything, “Levitation” is actually crunchier than Summers’ iconic work with the Police, though — in answer to the question about what took so long — he says the trio’s long-hoped-for 2007-08 reunion tour finally brought the guitarist back to rock after a series of journeys through jazz and world music over the years.

Circus Hero, named after a DJ’s malaprop with the band’s name, is due on March 25, 2014. Circa Zero will appear as part of South by Southwest that same month, where Summers’ recent documentary on his time with Sting and Stewart Copeland will be presented. Can’t Stand Losing You: Surviving the Police is also set for DVD release in 2014.
