After Deep Purple tour, Steve Morse to focus on Flying Colors: ‘We’re working on it’

Deep Purple’s tour behind the well-received What Now?! continues into April through Europe, but thereafter look for new music from guitarist Steve Morse’s other band, Flying Colors.

Featuring Neal Morse (a cofounding veteran of Spock’s Beard) and Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater), the supergroup issued a self-titled debut in 2012 and then a live document last year. Flying Colors is rounded out by Dave LaRue (who’s worked with Morse in the Dregs) and Casey McPherson.

Flying Colors debuted at No. 10 on the hard-rock charts for Billboard. But it’s been difficult to quickly replicate that success, with so many other things going on.

Morse returned to Deep Purple, of course. Morse has a vibrant solo career. Portnoy formed the Winery Dogs with a pair of Mr. Big veterans in Billy Sheehan and Richie Kotzen.

Finally, in December of 2013, writing sessions began for the Flying Colors follow up — and things have been moving quickly ever since. No release date has been set, but the project is coming together.

“We’re working on it this year,” Morse says. “We’ve got the songs done, and I think Portnoy has already done all of his drums. So, they’re working on lyrics, and we’re just now doing the templates for everyone to do their overdubs.”
