Glenn Hughes will once again by working with drummer Jason Bonham in a just-announced post-Black Country Communion band called California Breed. The trio is rounded out by Andrew Watt, who Hughes describes as a “white Jimi Hendrix.”
Hughes and Bonham formed the foundation of Black Country Communion over three studio albums between 2010-12, before differences between Hughes and guitarist Joe Bonamassa over touring commitments split the supergroup. BCC was rounded out by keyboardist Derek Sherinian.
California Breed’s initial project has been produced by Dave Cobb, of Rival Sons fame. Watt’s most recent release was the 2012 EP The Mulberry Tree. “Midnight Oil” will be the first single. Two other songs from the very first writing sessions between Hughes and Watt, “Solo” and “Chemical Rain,” also made California Breed’s debut album, due in May.
“The chemistry,” Hughes tells Classic Rock, “was instant. … It’s proper rock but at the same time it’s very now. Andrew is as influenced by Mick Ronson as he is Jimmy Page.”
Hughes has intimated that Julian Lennon helped in assembling this new lineup. He’s expanding on that now, saying: “Julian was having an exhibition of his photographs at the Morrison Hotel Gallery in L.A.,” Glenn recalls, “and he said, ‘You must meet this guy, he’s the most fantastic guitarist’ — who turned out to be Andrew.”
For Bonham, the new band represents a chance to continue something in Black Country Communion that ended far too soon: “Glenn and I had not only really locked in as a rhythm section in BCC but we’d started writing together and we both really wanted to keep that good feeling going.”
