‘This is short, but it needs to be’: Charlie Watts says new tour suits aging Rolling Stones

Gone are the days when the Rolling Stones mounted globe-trotting, seemingly never-ending tours. And that’s just fine with Charlie Watts, the now-72-year-old founding drummer.

“The thought of doing 50 shows, which was normal at one time for us to sign off on, that’s quite daunting,” he tells The Australian. Now we’re doing that in little bits. If we don’t do any more I’ll be quite happy with that.”

The Stones are set to perform on February 21, 2014 at Abu Dhabi, then will head to Tokyo, Macau, Australia and New Zealand. Mick Taylor, guitarist during what was arguably the band’s most important era of 1969-74, is again serving as a special guest. Taylor also appeared on several of last year’s shows, including two sold-out performances at Hyde Park in London.

“This is short,” Watts says, “compared to what we’ve done before – but it needs to be, I think, at our tender age.”
